Turtles and Tortoises in California

This list has been compiled to help turtle and tortoise owners locate veterinarians who can treat their animals. Please note that the entries have been submitted by California Turtle & Tortoise Club members and, in some cases, by the veterinarians themselves. Appearance of a veterinarian on the list does not constitute an endorsement by CTTC.

There have been tremendous advances in the treatment of reptiles over the last few years, but readers should be aware that few veterinarians have received specialized training in reptile medicine, let alone in caring for chelonians. You may wish to contact other CTTC members for references. Medical treatment for your pet can be very expensive. In our experience, typical office visits cost $35-$50. Diagnostic and laboratory tests (for example fecal examinations for parasites, blood work, or X-rays) often cost about the same amount as the office visit for each test. Combined with the cost of any medication, treatment for your animal may easily cost $100-$200. Costs for surgery are much higher.

Since most illnesses occur in recently acquired animals or in animals kept for long periods under improper conditions, expensive medical costs can often be avoided. Take care when selecting an animal, and make sure that you can provide the proper care for it before you get it. Quarantine new additions to prevent the spread of disease.
