Charles Darwin Foundation Appeals for Funds To Move Tortoises From Volcano

10/24/98 California Turtle and Tortoise Club Executive Board has donated $1,000 to the Charles Darwin Research Foundation to help move endangered Galapagos tortoises off the erupting Cerro Azul volcano to safety. The displaced tortoises include members of the highly endangered guntheri race. Charles Darwin Research Foundation plans to use them to establish a captive breeding group for this now very vulnerable subspecies of giant tortoise.

The Charles Darwin Foundation is now in urgent need of funds to cover both the relocation costs (just renting a helicopter to move the tortoises down the volcano cost the Foundation over $8,000) and the building and equipment expenses associated with setting up the new captive group. At least 15 more tortoises need to be relocated.

Please consider sending a tax-deductible donation, no matter how small, to:

Ms. Johannah Barry
Executive Director
Charles Darwin Foundation, Inc.
