11/11/98: Mary Whitlow reports that the proposed X'cacel beach development is coming under increased public scrutiny. Following a recent Business Week article, a Reuters story on X'cacel has now been picked up by ABC.
Last year, Sol Melia, the Spanish hotel chain that is developing the site, was given the Concrete Award by the Spanish environmental group "Grupo Balear d'Ornitologia i Defensa de la Naturalesa" in recognition of Sol Melia's destruction of zones of important ecological value in Central
America, while expanding its network of hotel complexes. If its planned development at X'cacel continues, Sol Melia will be destroying one of the most important sea turtle nesting sites left on Mexico's east coast.
